The LGBT community or GLBT communityalso referred to as the gay communityis a loosely defined grouping of lesbiangaybisexualtransgenderLGBT organizations, and subculturesunited by a common culture and social movements. These communities generally celebrate pridediversityindividualityand sexuality. LGBT activists and sociologists see LGBT community-building as a counterbalance to heterosexismhomophobiabiphobiatransphobiasexualismand conformist pressures that exist in the larger society.
We believe in the power of coming together for the greater good of all individuals. While rewarding, the work we do is not for the faint of heart, it takes courage and it takes conviction. Every day we learn more about the positive impact we have on our community, but we also witness the daily struggles of those who so desperately need our support.
Many community groups and organizations have played important roles in the birth, development and growth of modern LGBT culture. For many LGBT people, groups have been our introduction to queer communities, the places where we made friends, developed our sense of belonging, and organized around important issues. Yet their importance is frequently overlooked: many such groups have garnered little media coverage, leaving their roles in queer history not well-understood by later generations of LGBT people.
We organize fun and relevant social events and community-service projects that provide leadership opportunities and create friendships. Our goal is to make San Francisco a safe and happy place for everyone—by building bridges between our many social networks.
